Here are the bunch of cards I designed based on last week’s episode entitled ‘The Most Disappointed Man in the World.’ It was a solid episode, considering it had the tough task of following the Halloween-themed episode, which – we all know from my commentary last week – I thought was the best of this second season so far. (It was.) I liked that episode 7 explored the theme of ‘choices’.

THIS IS US, SEASON 2 EPISODE 7
Choices. I reflected the theme in the two cards above. The first being the ‘two very different photoshoots’ card: the Pearson family portrait celebrating Randall’s legal adoption, and William’s mugshot. This season has done such amazing juxtaposition work, don’t you think? This moment in episode 7 was another shining example.
The second card had to be part of what Randall says to Beth at the end of the episode after visiting Deja’s mother in jail, and hearing her perspective on ‘choosing’ to be ‘on the other side of the glass’. The idea that people who have choices tend to say ‘you could have made a better choice’ is so interesting…because it’s true: some people get a few lucky breaks, like Randall, that affords them a lot of the choices they get to make. It’s worth it to acknowledge, and I’m glad the show did.
I’m also glad we got to see William again, and now know a bit of the backstory right before Randall banged on his door in the pilot episode. OMG! I’m obsessed (duh!) with the way the show gives us seconds before or after a scene we are so incredibly familiar with, suddenly reframing our perspective on it to whole’nother deeper level forever. YAAAAAAS, This Is US, YAAAAAAS.
Okay, let’s shift gears and talk about poor Kevin, can we? The above rant was taken from this article, and it couldn’t have been more spot-on. I completely identify with his desperation and inner confusion, but not wanting to or even being able to express what’s going on. The thing to me that hit the most home in this episode was his reaction to Kate’s pregnancy news.
We saw in ‘The 20’s’ episode Kevin and Kate in Randall’s kitchen pouring each other glasses of red wine discussing how Randall seems to have ‘figured out his stuff’ so they are only about five years away from figuring out theirs. We’ve seen Kevin and Kate as twin besties from season 1, moment 1 – struggling together, but I think the realization of Kate being ready and excited about the baby news freaks Kevin out because of how terrified he is by the thought of this massive adult move. Gosh, the fear fear FEAR. I. COULDN’T. IDENTIFY. MORE, Kev. Me & you, Kev. I see you. I’m not abusing opioids like you, but I feel you, brother. I’m right there wit’chu. Somebody send help.
…and speaking of help, tonight is the first part of a three-part trilogy on The Big Three, and supposedly it’s a doozy. According to this article, Mandy Moore revealed a selfie in her IG stories a fresh from crying, tears still welled up in her eyes . In this post, Mandy writes: “Get ready. This one left me choking back sobs as Milo and I watched it in Dan’s office last week.” Oh boy. Ready your Kleenex for tonight, yawl… it’s gonna be a #TissueFRIGGINTuesday.
P.S. – I found out that the next three episodes in this ‘Big Three’ trilogy are the last episodes of the season for this year. There will be a December hiatus, and the second half of season 2 will return on January 2nd, FYI. // Be safe. Be strong. Somebody get Kevin help. Happy watching tonight! xoxo!
