MY WORK

I've been the Social Media Coordinator for me & my BIG ideas and The Happy Planner® brand for almost three years now.

The road it took to get here was incredibly bumpy and off the beaten path, but I've done some good work along the way. Let me tell you about it...

YES!
TELL ME YOUR CAREER STORy

It's kind of a long story...

NAH...
JUST SHOW ME DESIGN WORK

MY WORK

I used to be an Early Elementary Special Education Classroom Teacher...that is - until I realized it wasn't for me. (Yeah...WTF do I do now?!)

I loved the kids, and my kids (and their parents, my coworkers, and the administrators) loved me, but the work wasn't what I wanted to be doing for the rest of my life. It just wasn't the right fit.

MY WORK

Needless to say, this was a very confusing and trying time in my life. I'd work as a teacher by day, and go home and (cry...ahem...) try to come up with something else to pursue by night.

In between, however, I was crafting. I was teaching myself Photoshop. I was looking up font for fun. I was retreating to my craftroom - my sanctuary - any chance I got and making stuff... designing things. I started dreaming bigger and more on point than I ever had in my life.

MY WORK

I tapped into the online crafting and memory keeping community. I designed a small collection of wood-mounted stamps, and sold them from a webpage I designed and hooked up to Paypal.

I was making these small, organic shifts into the creative realm of myself, and tapping into an entrepreneurial side I had never nutured.

MY WORK

Then, one day in January 2012, while scrolling through my Instagram feed, I stumbled upon image after image of the Craft & Hobby Association (CHA) Trade Show, and a light bulb went off! I had never felt anything like it in all my life.

I realized that there was an industry in crafting and design - big enough to fill a whole convention center - and it was calling to me.

I knew I belonged at CHA, and I knew I would be great in this industry and at this work.

MY WORK

I dropped the bomb to my administrators that "I would not be coming back to teach next year" after just two years in the classroom.

This decision was liberating and in line with every fiber of my being, but also utterly terrifying. It's funny how often those two feelings go together. But off I went...

MY WORK

In September 2013, I started my three-month stint at Shillington Graphic Design School across the street from Grand Central Station in the heart of New York City.

I learned about it from a print ad in a magazine I flipped through one day, no doubt placed there by The Universe itself just for me.

MY WORK

For three months, I was the first one to arrive, and one of the last to leave. I was fascinated by every little piece of information, every new lesson on design, and watching my skill set grow. I couldn't believe I was able to take the visions and messages floating in my brain and communicate them on screen or in print.

...and that THIS was considered WORK!

MY WORK

I graduated in December 2013 with a portfolio filled with design work I was proud of, ready to pitch myself to potential employers.

I remember worriedly asking my teacher: "...but WHERE do I look for jobs?" and his answer was, "Apply where you want to work. Listing or no listing, apply."

It was the best piece of advice.

I wanted to work in the crafting industry. I wanted to design product. I applied to various companies, until six weeks out of design school...

MY WORK

...I did it! I landed the job I was looking for.

My first job out the gate was working from home for We R Memory Keepers as a Product Designer & Developer, for almost the same money I was making as a teacher. See...?Dreams DO come true!

Here is the first paper collection I created with the company called 'It Factor' - bold, bright, and trendy!

MY WORK

My second paper collection I created with We R Memory Keepers was called 'Love Notes' - soft and romantic, with a hand-painted feel.

I did this work in four months time with the company, and just as I finished 'Love Notes', gained a bit of confidence in my role, and was ready for the next thing - American Crafts bought out We R, and my position was terminated. The job hunt was back on, and those words from design school resurfaced in my head: "Apply where you want to work."

MY WORK

A few months later, I landed the job with me & my BIG ideas (mambi). Funny story how it happened, actually...

I applied to mambi for a design position, and at the same time mambi Owner Stephanie Fleming was stumbling upon my creative work on Pinterest. When I applied, she recognized my name, but couldn't pinpoint where from. When she realized and coincidently had a position open up, it seemed like fate!

MY WORK

It wasn't a design position, but I'd be playing an active role with product, and remain in the industry, so I took it.

Stephanie flew me out to sunny California, and on my first day on the job, she said "...so we're coming out with a planner."

MY WORK

That simple phrase has exploded into what is now the phenomenon that is The Happy Planner®, and I've been a part of its growth every step of the way. I couldn't be more grateful for that. My role in the company since that faithful first day has included...

MY WORK

...managing and creating content for the company's blog and social media channels.

I love communication as much as I love design, and this job has allowed me to use my unique voice and perspective on the industry to inspire others.

MY WORK

This job also got me to CHA...three years after first discovering the show via social media, and goaling to one day get there.

Myself, along with The Happy Planner® made our debut in the me & my BIG ideas booth, January 2015.

MY WORK

I have since educated on the product, inspired women on how the system could work for them, and worked the booth at three CHA Trade Shows...

MY WORK

...The National Stationery Show at The Javits Center in New York City...

MY WORK

...and three Pinners Conferences, in Texas, Arizona, and Salt Lake City Utah.

MY WORK

I also was given the opportunity to represent the company and be a guest speaker at a planner meet-up hosted by the NYC Planner Addicts in November 2016.

I was able to inspire and be inspired by 110 women that attended, and it was an experience I'll never forget.

MY WORK

In December 2016, my dream of teaching an online craft class came true when my class entitled "Memory Keeping in The Happy Planner®" launched on the Big Picture Classes website.

It was Big Picture's most popular class that month, and was met with rave reviews and positive feedback from its students. I poured my heart and soul into the content of that class, and am so grateful it was well received.

MY WORK

My job as Social Media Coordinator for the company has no doubt evolved since I started, and now branches into design team management, marketing, PR, brand consistency, web design, public appearances and education.

All the while, I've never given up on my dreams of designing - using my variety of experiences and translating them into products and services that could help and inspire other people. This is currently where I'm aiming to grow.

If you're interested in working together, you can e-mail me at

You can also contact me if you have any questions about my career journey, since pushing through fear, following your gut, and navigating through this beautiful, confusing life are some of my favorite topics to discuss.

I'll conclude with a few slides of projects and design work I've created along the way...
